Astronomical Mirror Deposition Systems

Dynavac has a standard system design for depositing high-reflectivity aluminum films onto astronomical mirrors. Using proven chamber design and deposition methods, Dynavac telescope mirror systems provide an automated and highly reliable process method. Dynavac has in-house capability to construct chambers up to 4.9 m diameter. Construction of larger systems is available. Special consideration is given to handling of the high-value mirrors during and after deposition.

Vacuum chambers are configured as a vertical bell jar with the bottom half serving as the mirror support structure. A multi-stage pumping system achieves the necessary pressure in the chamber to deposit a high reflectance coating. Deposition of aluminum is done with a multi-filament array and a glow discharge system. This technique allows uniform coating of the mirror without rotation of the mirror blank, greatly reducing system costs and risk to the mirror.
